PostSubject: Wheelset upgrade - need recommendations   Sat Apr 16, 2011 3:13 pm

Hi everyone. Been enjoying my Vitesse for a few weeks now. Transferred some parts from my mtb to my foldie. Now looking to upgrade the rims and tyres. I know a lot of you have done this upgrade so I would really appreciate your help.

1. What are the wheelsets currently available in Singapore and if possible, can you guys tell me the estimated price?

2. Will my current 7 speed cassette fit on the new rear wheel - can't afford to upgrade drivetrain and wheels at the same time Sad

3. What tyres and tubes do you recommend? I use Panaracer T-serv on my mtb hybrid and would like something similar (speed and durability).

Thanks!!
Linus

1.wheelsets for foldies starts from Kinetic at S$300 and above.. depend on ur budgets

2. can try using a spacer to fix 7 speed but i cant confirm since i never try it on a 20" before.. else use MTB drivetrain on foldie

3. i would prefer to use Schwalbe.. will recommed Kojak or Durano if u wana smooth rotation..

Hi ztcc78! Thanks for the reply. so far I've heard about Kinetic Comp, Kinetic Pro, Pazzaz carbon and XMD wheelset for 20". Just wondering about the price before I head down to MBS. As for using my MTB drivetrain, I was running a compact crank with 50-34t chainrings and a 11-21 Dura Ace cassette at the back so I'm not sure if it's ok for 20" since I see most of you are using 53t cranks. Anyway....I'll try to do more research before committing to anything.

Cheers

Hi ZT and GL. Thanks for the advice. Really appreciate your personal experience with the wheelsets. I think I'll stick to the original wheels and drivetrain for the next couple of weeks and see how it goes. Only using the Vitesse for a 12km roundtrip commute on weekdays and maybe longer casual rides on weekends so I don't actually need top speed for now Laughing But I will eventually upgrade to the Kinetix Pro or Pazzaz wheels with my MTB drivetrain. Only a matter of time Wink

Cheers!

You can get the Velocity Aeroheat 406 rims 32 hole from Rebound Centre
last time I checked rims is sgd160 /pair, wheelbuilding is sgd60/pair, DT spokes sgd1.50 /pc. Or you can try Chainreactioncycles.com from UK they have Sun Ringle CR-18 32/36 hole 406 rims. I've order 2 pcs. of these rims and it only cost me around sgd130 incl. shipping by DHL. It arrived after 2 days. Hope this helps.

just take note that the front wheel for Dahon will require a hub width of 74mm, not the more common 100mm.

Thanks for the recommendations lirpadz. Will keep that in mind when it's time to do the deed Very Happy

Hi tylsteve! Thanks for the reminder about front hub width. Not too many 74mm hubs out there and I'm aware that this is a common complaint of seasoned Dahon users.

Now that I know what's available and the rough prices, it's time to gather the forummers personal experiences with each brand/model. study

Yatsunil, I am in the same situation as you now, I am in the process of upgrading my 20" wheels. I went to the Bike Friday (known for their touring bikes) Yak mailing list and posted the same question. Here's what they said:

I like Velocity Aeroheat rims. I’ve had several sets in 406 and they’ve never let me down. For hubs I’d use Shimano LX for a good bang for your buck. Given the wheel size and the number of spokes you’ll likely use ~32 it really doesn’t matter what spokes you use since the wheel will be strong enough for an elephant if your wheel builder is any good.-Vik www.thelazyrando.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A cheap but reliable set would be to use Sun CR18 rims, Shimano LX hubs, and DT 15ga (1.8mm) spokes. They'll be more durable than almost any other bicycle wheel, won't be too heavy, and won't be too expensive. The quality and skill of the wheel builder matters at least as much as the components selected however, so make sure that the person who builds them has a good reputation for building quality wheels. - Alex Wetmore http://www.phred.org/~alex/bikes/
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, you didn't mention how heavy you are ... and even when loaded touring you are still the biggest load. But chances are that you'll find that 32 spokes are the best price/quality combination out there when considering rims and hubs. (IME, there are not many 24 or 28 spoke rims in ERTO 406)

I think that it would be hard to go wrong with Velocity rims. I've built a few wheels with their rims and have always been happy with them; although I find that rims with eyelets are preferred for building rims. The Aeroheat is probably the best choice for you, but if you were thinking of using wider tires ... 40mm or wider ... you might consider the Taipan.

I've also had good experiences with Sun CR-18s and Sun Rhyno Lites which are available in 406 and have eyelets. They would likely be cheaper than the Velocity rims and consequently have an excellent "bang for the buck". I'd use the CR-18s/Rhyno Lites for narrower/wider than 40mm tires.

I like Shimano hubs; but there is some extra maintenance with cup and cone hubs. My experience with new Deore hubs on the recumbent has been positive. Other than new old stock, Deore LX seems to have disappeared here in the US. In terms of number of seals, it used to be the case that LX had and external and internal seal on their hubs. So there is a big price jump from Deore to Deore XT. Velocity actually makes some nice sealed bearing hubs. Some friends report good experiences with them.

If I was building a cheap wheelset for 40mm wide tires and bought everything new, I would use Deore hubs 32o, Sun CR-18 rims, and 14/15 gauge double butted spokes ... there are a few places to get cheap double butted Sapim spokes. If I could find decent sealed bearing hubs cheap, I would seriously consider swapping the cup and cone hubs for them since maintenance is easier. If you were going high end, Deore XT, Velocity Aeroheat, and 14/15 gauge double butted spokes. If you're going real high end, I would swap the XT hubs with Phil Wood hubs.- Geof Gee

Thanks for the detailed recommendations. Unfortunately all the hubs mentioned are 100mm width and thus don't fit Dahons. There really aren't too many 74mm hubs, much less 32 hole ones!

Thanks for the pics. Price seems very reasonable. I'm guessing the wheels pictured aren't finished yet as the spoke pattern looks a bit funny. Maybe it's just the angle of the shot.

now mbs got new rims by Sparco Bikes. apparently its quite good also, and comes in different colors. for more choices you got to go Taiwan, where you will be overwhelmed by the choices. I shall post a link soon haha.

By the way there is so such thing cheap, good and light. you can only choose 2 out of these 3 attributes. =)
